Family Fishing Night - Tuesday, August 7


All ages are invited to join Johnston Parks and Recreation for a fun fishing event at Terra Lake Park on Tuesday, August 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Snacks, bait, and instruction will be provided for all participants. Equipment is available, but it is limited. Those over age 16 will need an Iowa Fishing License. Please bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water bottles for all participants. No registration is required for this free program.

Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors - Tuesday, August 7


The Johnston Senior group will be having an older, wiser, livelier event on Tuesday, August 7 at Jester Park Lodge. The program will feature the "Tale of Iowa’s Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument:, with lunch catered by The Radish. Following lunch, the group will travel downtown Des Moines for a drive-by of the Monument on the Capital Grounds. The group will then proceed to the Des Moines Art Center for a guided tour. Signup will be from Wednesday, July 25 through Friday, July 27, from noon to 1:00 PM. Cost is $10.00 per person. The event is restricted to the first 25 individuals and is sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Pie-Iron Desserts at Dewey - Wednesday, August 8


All ages are welcome to join Johnston Parks and Recreation to learn how to make Pie-Iron desserts at Dewey Park on Wednesday, August 8 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring bug spray, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles for all participants. No registration is required for this free program.

Birding - Friday, August 10


The Johnston Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a birding workshop for enthusiasts, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The workshop will be led by Dennis Thompson from the Des Moines Audubon. Appropriate clothing and footwear will be required as this will be a walking activity. A set of binoculars and a sense of adventure will be helpful. Those interested in attending can meet at the Terra Park shelter, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.

Sundae in the Park - August 12


Join the City of Johnston, Johnston Community School District, and Johnston Community Education on Sunday, August 12 for an evening of music and ice cream, with an extra sprinkle of fun! Come see what groups your child can become involved in outside of school and meet city leaders. A variety of youth organizations will be on hand providing information on youth activities. Walk through a JCSD school bus, hop into the cab of a city snow plow, explore a fire engine and sit shotgun in a Johnston police vehicle! All activities are open from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12 on the grounds of Johnston Commons, located outside the Johnston Public Library. 

Wildlife Night - Monday, August 13


Join Johnston Parks and Recreation at Adventure Ridge Park on Monday, August 13 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. to learn more about fun wild animals! Participants will enjoy a short program beginning at 5:30 p.m. After the program, attendees will make origami and s'mores! Please bring bug spray, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles for all participants. No registration is required for this free program.

Archery at Terra Park - Wednesday, August 15


Join Johnston Parks and Recreation for a beginner archery event on Wednesday, August 15, beginning at 5:30 p.m. There is no cost to register and all equipment is provided. There will be two shooting shifts, one starting at 5:30 p.m. and one starting at 6:15 p.m. Pre-registration is required as only 12 participants will be able to shoot in each time slot. This will be fun for the whole family, but children under age 10 will most likely not be able to shoot. Please bring bug spray, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle for each member of your family. Senior 50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, August 15


Join the seniors for 50+ fun night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Crown Point Community Center, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. The group will be playing BINGO and prizes will be awarded. Refreshments will be served.

RipRoar Triathlon - Saturday, August 18


Join the next generation of triathletes as they complete in the RipRoar triathlon at Terra Park. Juniors will swim 50 meters, bike 2 miles and run 1/2 mile. Intermediates will swim 100 meters, bike 4 miles and run 1 mile. Seniors will swim 200 meters, bike 6 miles and run 2 miles. Click here to learn more or to register. 

Creek Night - Monday, August 20


Join Johnston Parks & Recreation for Creek Night at Ray Schleihs Park, located at 5400 NW 55th Avenue on Monday, August 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Attendees will go on a walk and learn more about our wonderful waterways. Attendees should bring bug spray, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles for all participants. Depending on water levels, we may explore Beaver Creek hands-on. No registration is required for this free program.

Senior Safety - August 21, 22, 23


Join the Johnston Police Department as they educate seniors on safety at Crown Point Community Center from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Classes will include:
Basic Self-Defense - Importance of situational awareness in everyday life will be discussed, and how to practice it in your daily routine. Some basic self-defense techniques will also be discussed in this class, but participants will not be asked to demonstrate these techniques personally.

Financial Safety- Participants will cover some of the most common scams over the internet, telephone, and in person and some basic measures to take to help reduce the chance of becoming a victim. In addition to these participants will also get some helpful tips to protect themselves from fraud, identity theft, and other financial crimes.

Home Safety - Participants will increase their understanding on how to better protect themselves at home through proper safety practices and environmental design.

Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K - August 25


Join fellow community members for the annual Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K. This a fun event that includes a short-sleeve (performance blend) shirt, post-race refreshments, and raffles prizes. There will also be a 1,000 meter fun run around the lake, which begins at 8:00 a.m. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8:15 a.m. The 5K run/walk will be chip timed this year. Be sure to mark your calendar to save the date for fun activities including 50+ Fun Night Tailgate Party on Wednesday, September 19. Johnston Hy-Vee will be grilling hamburgers and serving fresh fruit, salad and dessert at Crown Point Community Center. 

Iowa Dog Jog - Saturday, September 22


At the Iowa Dog Jog, you'll strengthen your bond and probably also make some new friends along the way! Pick your choice of 2K or 4K, and then enjoy a rockin' dog festival full of fun activities for you and your dog, such as paw-print painting, off-leash dog parks with separate areas for large and small dogs, visit with great vendors and rescue groups, dog contests (including a whip cream eating contest...for your dog, not you) and so much more. Senior Field Trip - Thursday, October 11


Join the senior group on Thursday, October 11 for a day trip to Iowa Falls and cruise the scenic Iowa River while enjoying a relaxing lunch on the Empress Boat. Following the cruise, the group will tour the Historical Dow House and Metropolitan Oprah House, then head downtown Iowa Falls for a little shopping. The events are sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Trick-or-Treat with First Responders - Wednesday, October 24


Join community members and trick-or-treat with first responders on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Fire station 38, 10225 NW 62nd Ave. The Police and Fire Departments will be handing out treats from their squad cars and fire trucks and will also talk about "safety" when going out on Beggars' Night.

We encourage the children to wear their Halloween costume because the Police and Fire Chiefs will be voting on the best dressed child! Photos will be taken at the event and posted on our Facebook with the winners after the Chiefs cast their vote.
